Last week I was riding down Jalan Bisma and I spotted this amazing zig-zag pattern on a driveway. So I turned my bike around and went back to check it out and photograph it.
NOTE: Since I have been living in Bali (just over 5 months) I have had about 8 incidents on my bike and got away with nothing worse than some unattractive bruises.
I have a friend who says these 8 incidents are a gift (the universe reminding me to slow down and pay attention). A master in the field of mindfulness, my friend tells me the reason I keep having these near misses on my bike is because I need to slow down and be more present. Over the years I have had many people tell me I get distracted easily or too much or that I’m a dreamer… As a result I began to see this as a negative thing that needed fixing.
I’ve thought about the topic of A LOT over the past month. The questions “what makes you unique” and “what are your gifts” are things I ask my clients (and myself) quite frequently. After some thought and time I have realised that this ability to become captivated (not distracted) by things around me is one of MY gifts. I see things that many others would overlook. I am captivated by the unexpected beauty that surrounds me and am able to capture it, draw inspiration from it and share it with others so that they too can notice and appreciate it.
The thing about our gifts is that because they are what makes us unique and different, initially we may look upon them as a flaw or something that needs changing. Yet if we can shift the way we think about them, and look upon them with gratitude, we can see these gifts as the blessings that they are, only then are we able to use them to grow and flourish.
So yes, I need to slow down, I need to be more present so that I can notice the beauty around me and let it captivate me so I can do what I do best. Because being captivated by the natures beauty and really seeing my surrounds is one of my gifts. It’s how I find inspiration and joy in my daily life. It’s my magic. It helps me stay curious and in awe of the universe and I love that.
Do you know what you’re gifts are?
Could slowing down and becoming more present help you find them?
If you want to view the beauty that captivates and inspires me, here is where I keep and share my treasures.
